Scalability is the Holy Grail of software design and it refers to the capacity of an application to increase or decrease system performance and cost in response to changes in demand. For example, an app becomes widely popular and needs to handle a growing number of requests. At the other end of the spectrum, an app might need to decrease system resources because they are not justified in terms of cost.
